Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) is an affiliate of the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation. The mission of SPF is sustainably improving the situation of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) through clinical and interdisciplinary research on a national and international level. The SCI Population Biobanking and Translational Research Group of SPF leads cutting-edge research to enhance SCI diagnosis, prognosis, and therapies.

We are seeking a PhD candidate to join our SCI Population Biobanking and Translational Research Group.

PhD candidate in Probiotics and Microbiome Science 100%

Our Swiss National Science Foundation funded PRO-GIDSCI study seeks a motivated PhD candidate to investigate the therapeutic potential of probiotic and prebiotic supplementation in chronic SCI patients. This innovative research program explores the gut-brain axis and its role in SCI-related gastrointestinal complications, aiming to develop evidence-based clinical guidelines and enhance patient care through personalized treatment strategies. The program culminates in advanced data analysis, interpretation of findings, and publication in peer-reviewed journals. The PhD candidate will be registered at the University of Bern and supported by a experienced advisory team of experts in SCI research, microbiome science, nutrition, and clinical epidemiology.
  • Developing a PhD research plan
  • Reviewing scientific literature, planning, managing, conducting data collection and performing analyses
  • Writing of ethical applications and scientific papers as part of the PhD thesis
  • Presenting study results at national and international conferences
  • Collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researchers
  • Regular participation in the University's graduate program
  • Master's degree in Life Sciences, Biology, Medicine, or Pharmacy
  • Strong background in microbiology, immunology and molecular biology
  • Previous experience with bioinformatics is welcome
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills
  • Fluent in English with good German language skills
